Koko & Tree is a niche communications agency that specialises in telling the stories of companies active in South Africa’s vibrant and world-class agricultural sector. Located in White River, Mpumalanga, the heartland of South Africa’s fruit and nut industry, we communicate our clients’ vision to external stakeholders ranging from local and international clients, the media, neighbouring communities and the public sector.
We do this through building authentic and meaningful relationships, as well as storytelling and message crafting that speaks to the very essence of what our clients are doing to boost food security, job creation, wholesome nutrition and community upliftment.
Commercial agriculture plays a strategically important economic role in providing sustainable food systems that create employment and provide healthy nutrition for growing populations. Nowhere is this more significant than on the African continent, which is expected to see its population more than double to 2.4 billion by 2050.
Considering that Africa is home to more than 60% of the world’s available arable land, the continent is set to play an important role in global food security over the next century.
At Koko & Tree we firmly believe that agriculture is emerging as one of the world’s most strategically important industries and one that is critical to bringing about a more sustainable future
Having grown up in Tzaneen, a farming town in Limpopo, my understanding and appreciation of the agricultural sector is intrinsic to who I am as a person. With its subtropical climate and frequent rainfall, Limpopo produces around 40% of South Africa’s avocados, 40% of its mangoes, 20% of its bananas and 90% of the country’s tomatoes. Growing up in this agricultural mecca, has allowed me to observe first-hand the life-giving impact that agriculture can have on its surrounding community. Agriculture is usually the central catalyst for economic development in rural communities and provides the very lifeblood that sustains a country’s outlying towns and villages.
After graduating from Stellenbosch University where I completed a BComm Degree, I was afforded the opportunity to refine my communications expertise in London, where I worked for the likes of T-Mobile, Everything Everywhere and UBM. Since returning to South Africa in 2014 I have consulted to a variety of clients in sectors ranging from agriculture, professional services, telecommunications and the public sector. During my career I have represented multinational listed entities as well as smaller family-owned businesses.
My background in the domestic agricultural sector, coupled with my understanding of strategic communications, has convinced me that there exists a glaring need for a sector-specific public relations advisory that understands the unique and complex requirements of Africa’s agricultural industry. At Koko & Tree we specialise in advising and assisting clients seeking to boost their profiles or actively engage with external stakeholders as well those who prefer a more subtle and nuanced approach.
Our unique differentiator is born of the fact that we are farming people ourselves who operate from within the same rural communities that agricultural ventures find themselves in as well. As a truly boutique communications offering with a deep specialisation in agriculture, we aim to act as the link between your business and the outside world. That leaves you to focus on what you do best – farming!
